FAQ

How can you tell if an 8mm film has sound?

If the film has a silver, yellow, or rust-colored strip on one or both of the outside edges (next to and/or across from the sprocket holes), it contains audio.

How does your pricing work?

You only have to worry about three things: 1. a service fee (how much we’re transferring), 2. a storage fee (how you want to keep you digital files), and 3. a one-way shipping fee (the cost of mailing it in).

Which storage option should I choose?

Choosing a storage option is all about how you want to view your memories.

Our recommended option is to get them on a USB drive.

But… if you only want to pop them in the player and watch them on a TV, or give them as a gift to a loved one – you might want a DVD instead. However, DVDs have the smallest storage space – so if you have an order that transfers to over 9 gigabytes, you’d need to pay for more than one DVD. If you have a Blu-ray player, those discs will hold 5 to 10 times the amount of storage.

Why do you charge an editing fee?

The editing fee exists for those moments when unforeseen issues arise. Not every memory arrives in perfect condition. We will always do everything in our power to preserve your items exactly as they come to us and make sure they transfer to digital with no issue. We take pride in knowing that we will return your memories exactly as they were and create a digital copy that represents their true splendor. If it happens that a film turns out to be a distractingly blue tone or a VHS tape is too washed out, we will contact you with proof of the issue, an example of what we can do to fix it, and a quote of how long we think it will take. Then we would only proceed if you choose the edit. If you don’t, your digital memory will be returned to you as is.

How does shipping work?

Our shipping policy is simple: you pay one way, we’ll pay the other.

After you’ve filled out an order form, we’ll send you a printable mailing label you can use to ship your memories to us using your preferred carrier service. We’ll also send you our shipping recommendations and an instructional cheat sheet that shows you the best ways to pack up your memories.

When your order is done, we’ll mail it back to you at no additional cost.

Can I transfer my old Disney VHS tapes?

No. We cannot transfer material that is copyright protected. If you send us material that contains a copyright violation, we will not convert it for you.

How does copyright violation work? Does that matter for home movies?

If you send us your favorite copy of The Little Mermaid on VHS, we cannot and will not transfer that footage.

If your grandpa filmed nothing but TV programming for hours on end (it’s happened), we cannot transfer that portion of the footage.

If your VHS home movies have an episode of Bonanza bleeding through in the middle, we will cut that part out when we transfer your memories.

If your baby brother is running around the house singing the Bonanza theme song, we’re all good.

If you and your sister are performing a most-excellent dance routine to Paula Abdul’s ‘Cold Hearted Snake’, you’re good to go.

If you’re unsure, just ask.

Will you see everything on my tapes?

Yes – we will absolutely be viewing everything that is sent to us. It takes constant monitoring to make sure our equipment is working, your memories are being preserved, and the transfer is being completed successfully – and we use the utmost care when we do it. That means we’re going to see everything.
